In the strive for connection, we have found ourselves more isolated than ever before. Between political movements, ecological disasters, and social discourse, it has become far too easy to recognize the flaws in others, rather than the common ground. My collection focuses on the idea of humanity itself, how we are connected by our differences, and through memories. I used a variety of different media to create my pieces, including vintage photographs, embroidery, and fabricated parts of the human skeleton. In the most literal sense, “Under the Mask”, to me, represents how we are connected to each other, by blood and by bone, even if we can’t always see it. By uncovering our insides, we also reveal the deeper parts of ourselves- our hopes, our fears, our present, and our past. In this vulnerability, it is only then we can use this sort of transparency to look inside ourselves and find the reflections of others.
